The Best Hen Party Games for Your Hen Weekend!

We’ve made a shortlist of our favourite hen party games, great ideas for your weekend:

Prosecco Pong

Like beer pong but so much better as you get to drink Prosecco, probably one of the only games you don’t want to win at!

Pass The Parcel

With a hen party twist of course, why not fill up the parcel with funny photos or novelty wedding items.

Toilet Paper Dress

Split the hen do into teams and battle it out to create the best dress for the bride out of toilet paper.

True or False

Gather some funny/interesting facts about the bride to be from members of the hen party and throw in some wildcards, create a quiz to guess what’s true and what’s false.

Wine Tasting

Each of the hens brings a bottle of wine to the table, each wine is tested by all the hens and scored.  Everyone must have a glass for this one, you should keep the buyers’ names anonymous and it’s best to set a price range in advance.  The winning wine is then picked!  You could even pick a theme – ie wines that are wedding related (it might be a wedding related picture on the bottle or even the word ‘love’ in the wine name).

Cocktail Making Competition

Battle it out to make the best cocktail. Either bring your own secret ingredients individually. Or chip in altogether to get an assortment of spirits and garnish, for you to create your own perfect cocktail. A great choice for a hen weekend away in your own accommodation or at home.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our top hen party games and wish you all a fantastic time at your hen parties.

First Dance Lessons – Top Tips from Rock Our Wedding and Sashay Dance

We love dancing and recently met with Rock Our Wedding where we shared our top tips for your First Dance!

  1. Your audience – where are they going to be sitting or standing? You want to choreograph your dance so that you’re facing the audience and they can see you. If the guests are all around the room then you can use the space to travel round and do a little twirl so that everyone can see you at some point during the dance.
  2. Size of the dance floor – You need to know how big your dance floor is and what you’ve got to work with, which way will you be facing and where people are going to be sat.  When you practice your first dance you can map out the area.
  3. Keep it simple – the most simple of dances can be just as effective as extravagant numbers, plus wedding dresses aren’t the easiest of ensembles to dance in.
  4. Who’s going to press play? Sounds like a silly question but if you have a fancy starting position you don’t want to be running to press play. Or if you have a band how will they know you’re ready to start, you need to tell them. Don’t forget if you do have a band they can slow the tempos down, a great tip if your going for a Viennese Waltz!
  5. Song and dance choice – Please listen to the lyrics of your song and make sure they are appropriate for your first dance. Think about the pace of the music and what style of dance would go, you wouldn’t do a Jive to an Ed Sheeran slow number for example.
  6. Outfit and footwear – You must choreograph or get your teachers to help you with a routine that you can do based on what you are wearing.  A practice in your outfits is encouraged, ladies obviously without the groom seeing. You could get a pair of ballerina pumps to change into for your first dance, as not everyone can dance in heels or practice in your wedding shoes beforehand.
  7. The show much go on – forget any flaws in your first dance, no one will notice, just smile, carry on and enjoy.
  8. Bring on the guests, or not…! Some couples like to get all the guests on the floor halfway through their first dance, but you don’t have to. You could always dance a full track to one song, even edit the song to make it slightly shorter or have a separate song for everyone to get up to after your song. The important thing is to make it clear when you want your guests to join the dance floor. How about the bride and groom parting and selecting one of the guests each whilst signalling for everyone else to join in. Guests are not mind readers and do need some guidance on when to join in, you can even ask a few guests in advance to help with this too.
  9. HAVE FUN – A first dance is meant to be enjoyed and we are massive advocates of making sure dance is fun. It’s about you both taking your first steps of marriage together and dancing together for life.

A first dance isn’t something to be worried about, it’s something to get excited about and it can be so much fun! Use this as an opportunity to let your hair down before the wedding, learn something new with your partner and have fun with your first dance.

Sashay Dance Delivers Lecture at Leeds Business School

Earlier this week Sarah Hough – Director of Sashay Dance, visited Leeds Beckett University Business School to deliver a lecture on her top business tips and share her journey with Sashay Dance.

Sarah started Sashay Dance as a hobby in 2016 and quickly had to learn the ropes of business due to the company’s rapid growth.  She started dancing at the age of 6 and this has been her main passion in life.  One of her top business tips would be to set up a business based on your passion, as not only will that give you and your customers the most joy, it will also keep you going in the tough world of business when at times you may feel like giving up.

Part of the lecture of course had to involve getting the students up dancing which she managed to do under another tip around ‘getting out of your comfort zone’!

We really hope the tips helped and wish all the business students massive success in the exciting world of business.

What is a Sten and Hag party? Plus why dancing is the perfect activity for one!

A number of stag and hen parties have decided to team up with a joint sten or hag do (both mean the same thing). So the stag and hen party altogether on one big celebration, it’s also very popular with the LGBT community too. Here’s our top 5 reasons of why we think these are a fab idea:

• A lot of couples have the same set of friends and this makes it possible for everyone to celebrate together

• It can be cheaper, as there’s just 1 celebration instead of 2

• It’s on the same date so there’s no complications with too many plans before the wedding

• The couple don’t need to worry as much about what’s going to happen on each other’s hen or stag party!

• It’s a brilliant way to bring everyone together before the wedding. Our fun sten and hag party dance classes available across the UK are the ideal activity for this and you could even perform the routine at the wedding! This would be a complete surprise for the wedding guests and provides some excellent free entertainment. We have 14 groovy themes to choose from or you can even personalise your own, our top themes for a sten/hag do would be the Salsa, Strictly Come Dancing or Hip Hop. For more information check out our sten and hag party page.

Trade Secrets on Organising Your Wedding

We met with Ellen from LND Events who replaces the ‘how?’ with ‘wow’ when it comes to organising the most gorgeous weddings.  Here are her top 5 trade secrets for organising a wedding:

  • Don’t commit to a venue before checking the registrars are free.  If you’re not having a church wedding then make sure your venue will hold your preferred date with no money exchange, that way you’ll have time to ensure your registrars are free.  They get extremely booked up with lunch time weddings being the most popular times to go.  You don’t want to lose half a day by being left with a 3pm slot!
  • Remember it’s about you.  Many people try and please relatives or what to do to ‘crowd please’ but people will attend your wedding because they love you and want to see you happy.  So just pick the food, music and decorations you want and not what you think they want to see.
  • Make sure your venue has a wet weather plan.  Ahh the Great British weather…. there isn’t a safe season, month or day in this country.  As nice as it would be to party alfresco, do think of a contingency you’d be happy with so it doesn’t come as a harsh disappointment if the heavens open on the day.
  • Theme is not a dirty word.  It doesn’t have to be cheesy and the venue doesn’t have to be head to toe in one look.  If you’ve travelled the world together, partied at all the different festivals or have a love of a particular colour, then use those to your advantage when thinking about how you’d like things to look.
  • Hire a planner!  As planner I would say this but you may be surprised about all the different packages they can offer, so by no means does it stop you from having any input into your own day.  You can do as much or as little as you like but it’s never a good idea to work on your own day at the least.  For more information visit our website by following this link.

From all of us at Sashay Dance and LND Events we hope these top tips have helped and wish you the most amazing wedding day.

Hot off the press! Sashay Dance – Small Business of The Year?

We are delighted to read the article today on the York Press website to say we are sashaying our way into the frame for Small Business of The Year.  I wonder who will Sashay away with the trophy… only time will tell!

Here’s a link to the article and a copy of it below: https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/business/awards/profiles/17697996.sarah-sashays-into-the-frame-for-small-business-of-the-year/

York-based Sashay Dance specialises in fun hen party dance classes across the UK. It’s proven to be a hit, thanks to its ‘groovy themes’, such as Dirty Dancing, Greatest Showman and Spice Girls. It insists that all of its classes are suitable for everyone, even if you have two left feet, and are bags of fun. Sarah Hough, director and founder, started Sashay Dance as a hobby in July 2016 and it quickly became much more than that. This year it has already booked in 250 classes. Turnover has risen sharply and profit margins have almost doubled since it started. Longer term ideas include the opportunity to franchise the business globally.

Miss Hough said: “I had no previous business experience and I knew I needed to build on this knowledge gap so I looked into what was available in the area. I was given funded courses on leadership, growth, marketing, sales etc. I’ve also had some excellent mentors.” Last year the business won the Last Night of Freedom Best National Supplier Award. It has supported The Breast Cancer Haven Yorkshire by teaching regular classes, choreographing their Blossom Fashion Show and teaching ad hoc classes for a group of local ladies who had breast cancer. Sashay Dance contracts out 35 regular teachers across the UK.

Miss Hough said: “We are always innovative when it comes to thinking of new dance themes to keep giving something fresh to our customers and our teachers have been involved in this process. Technology such as Dropbox helps us with staff development and we upload choreography and lessons for the teachers to learn new routines or improve on their existing ones. From day one I’ve encouraged feedback from teachers on the classes and venues we use, this helps us to ensure we give the best service. “All our customer enquiries are replied to within 48 hours to eliminate the stress for the event organiser.

“Our teachers know that it’s not just a dance class, it’s about creating happy dancing memories to last a lifetime. They always take photos and videos so the hens have something to take away after. Often the hens even perform the routine at their wedding. “After every class I contact customers to get feedback.

“The potential for further growth is massive. We are already growing at quite a fast rate and that’s happening with my foot off the accelerator to ensure that everything is in place so that my customers have the best experience. I am really looking forward to the future and will be stepping it up another notch with new business-to-business contracts and potentially launching team building dance classes nationally.”

Top Tips to Improve Your Dad Dancing! Don’t forget Father’s Day 16th June

It’s Father’s Day on Sunday 16th June so I thought it would be nice to give all the Dads a present from us at Sashay Dance.

Here’s our top 5 tips to improve your Dad Dancing:

1. Don’t panic

Listen to the music a few seconds first which will help set the pace for your dancing. If it’s very quick music you’re best to do smaller steps and with slower music there’s time to do slightly bigger steps.

2. Keep it simple

To avoid the embarrassing Dad Dance sometimes it’s best to just keep it simple, side tapping and changing direction every now and then, whilst remembering to smile and have fun.

3. Drop the pint

On a table at the side of the dance floor please, it will be a lot easier to dance without it and pints can easily be spilled.

4. Spacial awareness

If there’s not as much room do smaller steps and avoiding flamboyant arm movements will help to prevent any bumps.

5. Don’t jump on the bandwagon

Some Dads purposely Dad Dance because they feel that it’s something they should do.

If all else fails….. just dance like noone’s watching, because they’re not they are checking their phones, we love the Dad Dancing really :). Wishing all the Dads a fabulous Father’s Day, I’ve written this blog post based on inspiration from my own Dad, thanks Dad.
